My parents bought me this mp3 player in 2001. It was definitely one of the best gifts I've ever gotten and it's still going strong. Although it is a bit bulkier than today's iPods, it was one of the first 20 gig mp3 players on the market. Finally, after almost 4 years of filling it up, I am nearly out of space (just 500 mb left). In the vein of Kulturblog's recent craze of ranking the best music of the last five years, I thought I would post this list. These are the artists with most songs on my mp3 player. I don't have a high-speed connection, so I have these all on CD too.
1. Morrissey/The Smiths - 375 songs
2. The Cure - 351 songs
3. Blur - 207 songs
4. Nine Inch Nails - 159 songs
5. Joy Division/New Order - 159 songs
6. Beastie Boys - 147 songs
7. The Clash - 129 songs
8. Pulp - 128 songs
9. Radiohead - 126 songs
10. Depeche Mode - 98 songs
11. Outkast - 80 songs
12. Los Fabulosos Cadillacs - 77 songs
13. Giacomo Puccini - 69 songs
14. Belle & Sebastian - 66 songs
15. Sleater-Kinney - 63 songs
Looking through my list, I think it is a fairly accurate representation of who my favorite bands are. Thanks to the benevolent influence of my older sister, I have musical taste about 10 years older than I actually am.

I only have two Soda Stereo albums so they didn't make the list. The Cadillacs and Soda were the only music I really got into on my mission. It is hard, after all, when you're not supposed to be listening to anything on purpose. The bishop in one of my areas copied me my first Cadillacs album. He was the coolest bishop ever.
Los Piojos are good too, but they were after your time, Capt. Jack.
For what it's worth, I think Control Machete is the best band in Spanish right now.
Sorry, Capt. Jack. I forgot that you've been back tons of times. (I'm jealous.)
I'm also sorry you don't share my affection for CM. Artilleria Pesada, Presente was a masterpiece.
Ironically, the music that reminds me most of my mission is a compilation disc of cumbia.
Oh, I miss the loud-speaker advertising. Who would have thought you could have eggs and homemade bread delivered right to your door in a Ford Falcon?
Yes, the crappy kind of cumbia was very big when I was there (96-98). We also lived above a pool hall, so that didn't help at all.
Welcome back, m.
My wife was really in to Belle & Sebastian and it rubbed off on me. I think I like them more than she does now.
It was pretty loud on the weekends, but there was a pizza place in the building so that made up for it.
We would occasionally go downstairs to play, when we had money. One time, on the break, my companion launched the cue ball through a sliding glass door. We never went back after that.
Come to think of it, Capt. Jack, our pool hall was on the second floor, too (we lived on the third floor). And it was near Ituzaingo.
If I ever get broadband, Capt. Jack, I will definitely check out Bearsuit... I mean Bersuit Vergarabat. Reading the lyrics also reminded me that I need to brush up on my Spanish.
Ever heard of Kings of Convenience? If you like Belle and Sebastian you'd probably like them. They're not goofy but mellow, acoustic with harmonies, good stuff.
I don't have an Ipod, I just carry an external hard drive to work with me that has all my music on it. Or almost all. More than 60 gigs worth. I was curious to see which artists I had the most music by, here's the top 5.
U2 (251)
Waterboys (217)
Everything But The Girl (196)
Cure (188)
The Frames (139)
Most of the Cure stuff I have is from someone I came across online who I mentioned wanting some Cure stuff to and she burned me their entire discography.
Susan-- No, I haven't heard of the Kings of Convenience. I will keep an eye out for them. I guess 180 Cure songs was a little bit of overkill.
